ABOUT THE STATEN ISLAND COMEDY FESTIVAL:
In August 2008, Soul Joel Productions hosted the 1st Annual Staten Island Comedy Festival that brought four nights of comedy to four different parts of the island. The first three nights brought laughter to Stapleton, Westerleigh, and Great Kills. The excitement grew as Staten Islanders anticipated Thursday night’s Grande Finale at the historic 1,800-seat St. George Theatre. People from all over the Tri-State Area came out to enjoy the night of laughter and fun.
Soul Joel Productions (SJP) raised the bar for 2009. In late June, as schools neared conclusion, SJP offered six nights of entertainment to kick off the summer. Monday and Tuesday played host to the “Big Stage Competition” which saw ten online winners compete for two spots on The Grand Finale. The festival traveled to The Bistro in New Dorp on Wednesday for the exciting showcase of SJP talent as Yannis Pappas and Maddog Mattern hit the stage. On Thursday, SJP added a night of improv at the Muddy Cup as local talent spontaneously joked around with the crowd. Friday’s show featured Last Comic Standing co-headliners Pete Dominick and Joe DeVito at the luxurious Lorenzo’s Restaurant, Bar & Cabaret at the Hilton Garden Inn.
The 2nd Annual Staten Island Comedy Festival concluded the week of laughter with “The Grand Finale” at the Music Hall at Snug Harbor on Saturday, June 27th. The event began with the heartfelt musical talent of Paul Strayfer, continued with “Big Stage Competition” winners Bryan Berner and Nanci Richards, and ended with the hilarious jokes of Last Comic Standing Finalist Gary Gulman. The festival helped brand Staten Island as one of the newest hotbeds for comedy and had people buzzing about the island for months to come.
